The Congress of Youth Association of Finno-Ugric peoples was held in Petrozavodsk

The IX Congress of Youth Association of Finno-Ugric peoples took place on August, 14-15 in Petrozavodsk. Action was included in the Plan of the Republic’s Complex Actions on preparation and carrying out of the Second Decade of the World Indigenous People in 2008 – 2009 and the Year of Youth in the Russian Federation.

The Congress of the Youth Association of Finno-Ugric Peoples to be held in Petrozavodsk

Within the scope of the Year of Youth in the Russian Federation and the Second International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People on August 14-15 Petrozavodsk will host the IXth Congress of the Youth Association of Finno-Ugric Peoples (MAFUN/YAFUP).

The Association’s primary intent is preservation and development of Finno-Ugric cultures and languages, as well as distribution of information on them.

Erzyas Seek Republic Status

Furious at what they see as threats to their language and culture, the Erzyas, a 300,000 plus-strong Finno-Ugric linguistic community that Moscow has long treated as part of the Mordvin nation, are demanding that Moscow agree to establish a separate and distinct Erzyan Autonomous Republic within the Russian Federation

The Congress of the Erzya People (“Erzyan’ Inekuzho”) ten days ago declared that discrimination against their nation has become so severe and so violates the norms of international law and the Russian Constitution that it had no choice but to seek its own autonomous republic.
