Within the scope of the Year of Youth in the Russian Federation and the Second International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People on August 14-15 Petrozavodsk will host the IXth Congress of the Youth Association of Finno-Ugric Peoples (MAFUN/YAFUP).
The Association’s primary intent is preservation and development of Finno-Ugric cultures and languages, as well as distribution of information on them. Today the Association includes 22 public organizations of the Finno-Ugric peoples, the Republic of Karelia is represented by the regional youth public organization Nuori Karjala (Young Karelia), Karelian regional public organization The Ingermanland Union of Finns of Karelia, Karelian regional public organization Vepsän Vezad (The Union of Veppsian Youth).
In work of the congress there will take part about 60 delegates and 30 observers from the Finno-Ugric countries and regions of the Russian Federation. The forum will consider issues of uniform information space formation, support of young families, development of languages and cultures of the Finno-Ugric peoples, improvement of educational system, preservation of identity of the Finno-Ugric peoples, development of youth ethnocultural tourism.
The Congress will admit the new MAFUN/YAFUP members and define priorities of work of the Association for the next two years.
