The Congress of Youth Association of Finno-Ugric peoples was held in Petrozavodsk

Participants of the CongressThe IX Congress of Youth Association of Finno-Ugric peoples took place on August, 14-15 in Petrozavodsk. Action was included in the Plan of the Republic’s Complex Actions on preparation and carrying out of the Second Decade of the World Indigenous People in 2008 – 2009 and the Year of Youth in the Russian Federation.

Members of youth national public associations of Finno-Ugric peoples from Mordovia, Komi, Mari El, Karelia, Udmurtiya, Bashkortostan; Khanty-Mansi, Yamal-Nenets and Komi-Permyak Autonomous Areas; St.-Petersburg and Moscow have taken part in work of the forum.

Within the scope of the Congress plenary and group sessions took place. The Congress considered issues of formation of ethnic consciousness of Finno-Ugric youth. Leaders of public associations have told about implementation of ethnocultural programs, projects and actions focused on imparting traditions and culture of Finno-Ugric peoples to youth, introducing new forms of popularization of historical and cultural heritage. Delegates of the Congress have approved a draft resolution in view of offers made by participants of the forum on results of work in groups.

At the group sessions of the CongressMembers of the MAFUN Board representing every region and a new chairman have been also elected from among the Congress delegates. In the next two years the Association will be headed by Alexey Tsykarev, member of the Board of the regional youth public organization Nuori Karjala (Young Karelia), member of the Board of Karelian youth public organization Trias. The association will carry out serious work to adjust the Charter of the organization in accordance with the legislation, to define effective mechanisms to involve youth public organizations of the Russian Federation in eager activity, to continue building constructive relations with bodies of the government and local self-government.

The next MAFUN Congress will be held in 2011 in Saransk (Republic of Mordovia).
