Tatyana Yamberdova was born in Yoshkar-Ola, the capital of the Republic of Mari El and lives in the town of Velikiye Luki, Pskov Region. She is a professional musician and plays and teaches classical violin.

Kovyzh is the Mari name for fiddle/violin. Tatyana is engaged in research and restoration of the Mari folk fiddle tradition, which unfortunately was interrupted in the second half of the 20th century. The melodies on this album were taken over by her from archival recordings of old violinists or adapted from surviving similar accordion tunes.

The cover image is a painting “Melody of generations” by Tatyana’s father, Honored Artist of Russia Ivan Yamberdov. It depicts Tatyana herself and her great-grandmother Lchi.

Recorded at Territoria Dzen guesthouse in Velikiye Luki, Pskov Region, Russia, October 23, 2021.
