Governor of Mari El promised to dig up a village road ahead of elections

markelov_shimshurgaLeonid Markelov, the current governor of the Republic of Mari El, promised to dig up a village road before the elections that will be held on 13 September 2015. The incident occurred at the opening of a medical and obstetric station in the village of Shimshurga in the Zvenigovsky District.

At this event, Markelov repeatedly claimed that “he” had built the station in question, when the station was in fact constructed as part of a federal program, was primarily funded by federal funds, and was fully funded by public funds, not Markelov’s personal funds.

“This is the first time I have been greeted like this. This has never happened to me before anywhere, that people growl and growl and snarl. People say thank you everywhere. Well I guess I should give you a taste of your own medicine, yes? Close everything and leave, and dig up the road. You don’t believe I’ll dig up the road? And then you’ll get to wait three years.”, Markelov told local residents.
