Last year within the scope of the Program there had been implemented 80 programs, projects, and activities directed on increase of the level of native language speaking by Karelians, Veppsians aand Finns, formation of positive attitude to languages and traditional culture of their people among the rising generation, preservation and expansion of book printing in national languages, strengthening of the role of families and public institutes responsible for preservation of national originality of the Baltic and Finnish peoples of the Republic of Karelia, strengthening and development of international and inter-regional cooperation.
Implementation of programs, projects and activities in 2009 was provided by more than 60 social partners of the Ministry. To participate in activities it has been involved more than 130 social partners – representatives of spheres of education, science, culture, national public associations of the Baltic and Finnish peoples, bodies of the government and local self-governments, mass media. The most active in joint activity were Kalevala, Olonets, Pryazha national municipal areas, Karelian State Pedagogical Academy, Petrozavodsk State University, Periodica Publishing House, Institute of Language, Literature and History of Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, public organizations of The Olonets Karelians, The Vepsian Culture Society, The Union of Karelian People, League of the Baltic and Finnish Peoples, The Ingermanland Union of Finns of Karelia, Trias Karelian Youth Public Organization.
To improve competence of experts in the field of national development of Karelians, Veppsians and Finns of the Republic of Karelia there had been held 7 conferences, seminars among which the most significant were the Republican workshop conference on development of language environment of the Karelian people Through the Past to the Future, Inter-regional workshop conference Russian Finns: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow, etc. It is especially necessary to mention the VI Congress of Karelians of the Republic of Karelia held in June and opening of the Korela Inter-Regional Center for Support of the Baltic and Finnish Peoples. There is no doubt that activity of the Center will allow to solve tasks of organization of life activity, preservation of native languages and cultures of indigenous Baltic and Finnish peoples of Russia more actively and at higher organizational level involving more partners.
Supporting good traditions the republic understands importance and significance of steadfast attention to development of civil, moral and spiritual values among children and youth. During the Youth Year in August, 2009 Karelia has was honoured to host the IXthe Congress of Youth Association of Finno-Ugric Peoples (MAFUN). The Congress has allowed to develop friendship between representatives of our peoples, has given a new impulse in studying languages, cultures, customs, traditions, and has generated new positive directions for cooperation.
Significant activities devoted to the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Karelia were anniversaries of public organizations of The Union of Karelian People, The Vepsian Culture Society, The Ingermanland Union of Finns of Karelia, where the work accomplished in 20 years was summed up.
Special attention was paid to issues ot re-vitalization of Karelian and Veppsian languages that have recently acquired their written forms. Fruitful work of the Republic’s terms and spelling commission under the Head of the Republic of Karelia has resulted in ready manuscripts of The Large Russian-Karelian Dictionary (Livvic dialect), The Russian-Karelian Phrase Book (Karelian proper dialect of Karelian Language), and Karelian for Beginners manual. Besides, work on drawing up of The Large Russian-Karelian Dictionary (Karelian proper dialect of Karelian Language), The Veppsian Language Spelling Dictionary proceeds.
Within the scope of the National Literature project in 2009 there has been published 6 books in the general circulation of 2900 copies, 2 СDs, collections of materials of the VIth Congress of Karelians and conferences. Presentation of novelties of literature published in the previous year was held at the Let the Native Language Sound… literature and poetry soiree in December.
Apart, within the scope of the Program it is necessary to poit out the activity of Periodica Publishing House on preservation and development of Karelian, Veppsian and Finnish of languages by means of national print media.
Interesting to citizens of municipal regions is the project of Road and Facade Signs in National Languages. In 2009 road signs were installed in Kalevala national, Muezersky and Louhi municipal entities. 14 front signs have been made for establishments of education and culture of Pryazha, Kalevala and Medvezhiegorsk regions. In total within the past four years there have been made 70 front signs and 65 road signs in Karelian and Veppsian languages for regions densely inhabited by Karelians and Veppsians.
In 2010, the year of the 90th anniversary of formation of the Republic of Karelia, implementation of a number ethnopolitical, ethnosocial and ethnocultural projects and activities directed on preservation of ethnic identity of Karelians, Veppsians and Finns within the scope of the The State Support of Karelian, Veppsian and Finnish Languages in 2006 – 2010 Regional target program will continue.
