Osan Yöstä (Part Of The Night) is a super-group of Finno-Ugric folk, rock and pop performers.

The band started in 2011 in Petrozavodsk. The line-up includes 6 singers representing different Finno-Ugric nations.

The song ‘Northern Lights’ is the result of a collaboration of 30 musicians and translators from 4 countries. It is based on the eponymous poem written in 12 Finno-Ugric languages. The poem features Aapo Ilves, an Estonian singer, songwriter, actor, dramatist, novelist and journalist. In 2004 Aapo’s song ‘Tii’ was performed by Neiokõsõ in the semi-final of the Eurovision contest.

The song was recorded in Petrozavodsk in September 2011 during Carelian Faces festival. The song includes couplets in Khanty, Komi, Finnish, Karelian, Udmurt and Izhorian languages. The chorus lists all Finno-Ugric peoples’ endonyms. The song was recorded with assistance of ‘Nuori Karjala’ society and ‘Suomi-Venaja-Seura’.

The line-up includes 6 singers representing different Finno-Ugric nations:
- Uvan Zaytsev. Singer of the Khanty shamanic rock band H-Ural located in Yekaterinburg, Russia. In 2008 H-Ural headlined the V International Finno-Ugric Congress in Khanty-Mansiysk. After 2010 European tour H-Ural is the world’s most known rock band singing in Ob-Ugrian languages.

- Ola San. Komi ethno-pop singer

- Arto Rinne. Finnish musician, songwriter and festival organizer born in Karelia. Arto Rinne performed for leading Karelian rock bands Myllärit and Santtu Karhu ja Talvisovat. Now he is ruling his family folk-oriented band Sattuma. Arto is the head of the Carelian Faces festival held in Petrozavodsk, Russia since 2003.

- Olga Terekhova. Karelian singer, lead voice of the band Konec Leta.

- Svetlana Ruchkina. Udmurt singer, member of the pop trio Malpan and of the rock band Silent Woo Goore. In 2010 Silent Woo Goore performed a number of shows in Finland as a part of Sugri Rock tour getting enthusiastic press revues. In 2011 Silent Woo Goore reached place #2 on Liet International – the biggest international song contest for contemporary songs in European minority languages.

- Antti Kirkkonen. Leader of the Ingrian ethno-rock band Konec Leta which performs songs in Izhorian language. Since 2008 Antti is organizing Karelian Spring festival in St. Petersburg.

An alternative version of the song including Hungarian and Estonian couplets was recorded especially for Hungarian Eurovision contest’s application.

The song’s lyrics were written by Uvan Zaytsev and Emilia Goronkova. The composer is Irina Gerulaitis.

The song’s lyrics were translated by Schlachta Viktória (Hungarian), Zoya Ozelova (Khanty), Arto Rinne (Finnish), Mekhmet Muslimov (Izhorian), Darali Leli (Udmurt), Aapo Ilves (Estonian), Nina Obrezkova and Andrey Yepaneshnikov (Komi) and Santtu Karhu (Karelian). The rest of the poem was translated by Nikolai Abramov (Vepsian), Raya Orlova (Moksha), Elvira Kurai (Mari) and Yekaterina Mechkina (Saami).

For the peoples of Russia, this coincided with a time of fundamental transformation of social life. Finno-Ugiic peoples were not ready to severe tests, which are presented by globalization. The new historical situation intensified among them the loss of etnicity, expanded assimilation. This was reflected in demographic indicators.

According to the 1989 census, the number of Uralic (Finno-Ugric and Samoyed) peoples in the USSR amounted to 3,3 million people in 2002 in Russia – 2,7 millions, for the period between the two censuses, it declined by 14,3% at a total loss ofthe population of Russia on 1,3%. The traditional culture ofthe peoples displaced by «mass culture». The younger generation ofthe Finno-Ugric peoples developed the mentality that promotes renunciation of ethno-cultural values and ancestors’ language.

An improvisational theater production performed as part of Tallinn 2011 Capital of Culture will highlight Finno-Ugric culture and traditions, with no two performances alike.

Khanty, Mansi, Mari and Udmurt actors will star alongside Estonians in one of the first collaborations between Estonian actors and colleagues from the various small First Nations in Russia’s taiga belt.

“Sugrierror”, produced by Anne Türnpu, Eva Klemets and Mart Koldits, focuses on the identity of the small First Nations, roots and how they differ from the “Euro-American” world.

The directors say the performance “reconstructs itself each performance by connecting existing components based on what day it is, who is sitting in the audience, what the actor is thinking or other workings of chance.”

The first rehearsals and workshops began last summer, with Finno-Ugric and Estonian actors visiting the Baltioscandal festival and taking in local culture in southern Estonia and the Seto region. In April 2011, the actors met in the Khanty’s homeland on the other side of the border. Now they are back in Estonia for rehearsals at NO99 Theater and Esna manor.

Finno-Ugric theater traditions in Russia are based mainly on Russian traditions, although the Mari do have their own state theater in the national language.

“Collaboration with Estonians encourages the theater of the kindred peoples to be more tied to their nation and culture,” said Kadi Raudalainen of the Fenno-Ugria Foundation.

“Sugrierror” runs from August 26 to 30 at the Straw Theater in the Skoone Bastion.

From 29 June to 3 July, the folklore festival “Jutajaiset” is taking place in the Finnish city of Rouvaniemi. Among the participants at this festival is the Mari folklore ensemble “Mariy Pamash” from Yoshkar-Ola. “Mari Spring” Ensemble, officially the Folk Ethnographic Company of the Republican Research and Methodical Center of the Folk Arts and Cultural Work, is founded in 1974.

The mission of the group is to revive music and dance culture of every Mari ethnic group. To preserve and develope the unique music and dance tradition, national costumes and to popularize the national traditions. It has been rewarded by the State Youth Prize.

The group has participated in festivals in Holland, Spain, Finland, Hungary and Estonia and in the regions of the Mari people compact residence in republics of Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Chuvas and Udmurtia and in other towns in Russian Federation.

The artistic director and choreographer of the ensemble is Ms Maria Solovyeva.

As a contact person of their visit has been Ms Olga Leontyeva from the Departmen of Media and Ethnic Affairs of the Cultural Ministry of Mari El Republic.

This visit has been supported by the Kindred Peoples Programme of Ministry of Education.

The administrator of the Meadow Mari wikipedia, ПешСай, blocked 10 users and stripped the user Санюн Вадик of his administrator rights.

Vyacheslav Kileev, alias ПешСай, accused the users Санюн Вадик and Maikl20021 of sockpuppetry, i.e. of creating multiple accounts to achieve selfish goals. He based this on the fact that their user accounts had posted from the same IP address, and blocked a total of 10 accounts as a result. He also used this as a justification to deprive Санюн Вадик of his administrator rights.

It is hard to imagine that Kileev would not know the reason the IP addresses line up, as the people in question all work in one institution – Mari El Radio. It is also hard to imagine that he did not know that the accounts corresponded to individual, real people: Санюн Вадик is Vadim Protasov, Maikl20021 is Michael Pirogov, Lifeway is Andrew Chemyshev, Valerik is Valery Ocheev, Игорь Таныгин is Igor Tanygin, Эсметр is Sergey Karpov, etc.

As a result, the Mari Wikipedia is now practically left without people well-versed in the Mari language. Kileev’s language skills leave much to be desired, as confirmed by his profile in the Wikimedia Incubator:

“Лӱмем Вячеслав. Мый марий улам. Рушла кутраш кертем. Английскийдене кутраш кертем. Мый Википедийын интерфейсым кусарамем.”

This brief autobiography contains eight grave grammatical and orthographical mistakes. A translation into English, in which Mari mistakes are replaced with English mistakes of a comparable magnitude, might be:

“My name is Vyacheslav. I am a Mari. I cen spiiking Russian. I cen spiiking Anglais. I translatinge the Wikipedia interface.”

Members of the International Consultative Committee of the Finno-Ugric Peoples (ICCFUP) from Hungary have refused to agree for transfer of Finno-Ugric movement headquarters from Finland to Russia. Media-centre FINUGOR reports by the information of Alexey Tsykarev.

The session of ICCFUP which is an executive body of World congress of the Finno-Ugric peoples passes in Petrozavodsk on April, 5th. On the agenda the Committee office topic is brought out. It was already discussed on V World congress of the Finno-Ugric peoples in Khanty-Mansiysk, 2008. At delegation voting only from nine peoples have supported moving of headquarters to Russia, and different offers, including Saransk and Syktyvkar at once have sounded; 14 delegations have supported to leave all as is.

The director of department of a national policy of the ministry of regional development of the Russian Federation Alexander Zhuravsky has declared in Petrozavodsk that in Khanty-Mansiysk the president of Russia Dmitry Medvedev spoke about a rotation principle concerning headquarters problem. Zhuravsky has suggested to return to consideration of this question to take out on the congress in the Hungarian city of Shiofok in 2012 the ICCFUP coordinated position. Some of the Committee members from Finno-Ugric Peoples of Russia supported this initiative.

Members from Finland have diplomatically refrained from the position statement by this point in question consideration. Hungarians and other members from Russia, however, have sharply objected to carrying over. «The headquarters perfectly functions in Helsinki and it is not necessary to transfer it to Russia», – the ex-ambassador of Hungary in Russia Gyoergy Nanovsky has underlined.

As procedure of decision-making in ICCFUP is based on the consensus pattern, the initiative of the Russian ministry has been rejected. However consultations on this question will proceed.

RT’s close-up team continues to explore the Western Urals area, as they get to know the culture and the traditions of the Udmurtian republic and its capital city, Izhevsk.

The Republic of Udmurtia is known for its centuries-old traditions, which represent a mixture of mythology, ancient religions and ethnic rituals.

Its creative spirit gives rise to local talents achieving success home and abroad.

One of its famous sons, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, is still one of the most-played composers in the world, while others, less famous, try to make their own cultural mark.

In this region, Christianity for centuries co-existed with shamanism and paganism. And the rich heritage of the past is still very deeply-felt in the society to this day.

When you come to Izhevsk, you are in for a surprise. Though it is known for its weapon-producing factories and plants, the first thing that catches your eye is the city’s architecture, which seems to have changed little over the centuries.

And once you dig deeper, you will find the Udmurt people are good at preserving their heritage – and not just on the outside.

“Udmurt Culture for me is a part of my life, it’s a way of life for me,” local resident and singer Nadezhda Utkina said. “My mother’s songs and proverbs, my grandmother’s songs and fairytales she told me. This is a very ecological, very educational, very soothing and calming, close-to-nature culture.”

But to get a full taste of the Udmurt culture, you have to get out of the city and go to the village, where traditional songs, dances, and food are still very much a part of everyday life.

So RT hit the road, trudged through the snow, and ended up in the village of Buranovo, the home of local celebrities who made waves in Russia’s last bid for Eurovision Song Contest glory.

But do not expect to find any short skirts and hair extensions here. Most of the stars are over the age of 70, and dress much more tastefully.

“We come here in the evening, knit, sew, watch TV – and sing during the commercials,” one Buranovo Babushka said.

These grandmothers became an unexpected hit, coming one place short of representing their country, but they still caught the audience’s imagination with their songs, giving some of the world’s best-known hits a new sound.

“After Eurovision, we wanted to come home quietly. The Udmurt are shy people, and we didn’t want to make a fuss. But people found out, and when we got back to our village, they gave us a grand welcome home party, with songs and dances,” remembers Olga Tuktareva, lead singer of Buranovo Babushka.

“What we do, people do the same thing in every village in Udmurtia” Olga says.

The people here seem to have a song for every occasion – be it a wedding, baptism, birth, or seeing a young man off to the army.

Whatever life throws at them, the Udmurt find a way to mark it and maybe it is that approach which has kept these traditions going strong for hundreds of years.
